DESCRIPTION
2009 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 Deck Saloon
Great design does not date and the 42DS remains one of the most admired deck saloon cruisers ever built. She blends genuine sailing performance with exceptional comfort, delivering a cockpit that is spacious, secure and beautifully ergonomic, and an interior that feels light, balanced and effortlessly liveable.
Below, the deck saloon concept truly shines. Elevated windows flood the saloon with natural light and panoramic views, creating a space that feels more like a 45-footer than a 42-foot hull. The layout is perfectly proportioned: a generous guest cabin with private ensuite forward, and an extraordinary full-beam owner’s cabin aft with king-sized berth and true sit-up headroom. It is rare to find this level of comfort and volume so cleverly packaged.
A Desirable and Well-Specified Example
This particular yacht ticks all the right boxes.
She features the earlier, distinctive teardrop coachroof windows, combined with the later lighter timber finish that enhances the sense of space and brightness below. The owner’s cabin benefits from the highest sitting headroom version, making extended time aboard genuinely comfortable.
While most 42DS models were delivered with in-mast furling, this is one of the few imported into Australia with a conventional mainsail. Paired with the Performance Pack and upgraded sails, she offers a more engaging sailing experience. Expect rewarding cruising performance, whether you are passagemaking up the coast or enjoying twilight racing and fun events with friends.
Cockpit and Outdoor Living
Boarding is effortless via the integrated swim platform with moulded steps, large swim ladder and hot and cold shower. It is a practical and inviting space for life at anchor.
Storage is excellent throughout the cockpit:
Twin gas locker under the port helm seat
Deep storage locker under the starboard helm seat
Large lockers beneath both cockpit benches
The cockpit seating steps up to provide comfortable, protected seating behind the spray dodger, creating a secure environment for passagemaking.
A full canvas package was renewed in 2021, including spray dodger, bimini, infill and side screens, ensuring excellent protection in all conditions.
Interior Comfort and Practicality
Stepping below, the L-shaped galley to starboard is both practical and well appointed, featuring a microwave powered by a Sinewave inverter that also supplies all onboard power points.
Opposite is a forward-facing navigation station, while the saloon offers:
A bench seat to port
A generous U-shaped dinette to starboard
Abundant storage throughout, including beneath the saloon sole
Forward, the guest cabin is spacious with a large hanging locker and private ensuite. Aft, the full-width owner’s suite is the standout feature, with king-sized berth, excellent headroom and near-new mattresses. Fans are fitted throughout the boat for comfort in warmer climates.
Proven Bluewater Capability
This is a design with genuine cruising credentials. Two 42DS yachts famously sailed out from France to Australia, and many others have explored the Australian East Coast and ventured onward to Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. She is perfectly suited to a retired couple seeking comfortable coastal cruising, with the capability to stretch her legs offshore when the dream calls.
Meticulously Maintained
This yacht presents in very well-maintained condition, with key upgrades and servicing completed:
New rigging – March 2024
Engine last serviced – October 2025
Antifouling completed – December 2025
She is ready for immediate cruising.
If you are seeking a genuine deck saloon cruiser that offers light-filled living, proper sailing performance and serious cruising capability, this 42DS deserves your inspection.
