When Anthony and Jodi Heeney, owners of Port Jet Cruises. Set out to find the best engines for their newly custom-built Ocean Rider Boat. The Mercury 350hp V10 SeaPro quickly became the standout choice.

The vessel features a triple outboard configuration. To further enhance their fleet, the Heeney’s also upgraded their older Wave Rider with triple 300hp V8 SeaPro engines.

Port Jet Cruises, based in Port Macquarie, Australia, operates their boats for various water activities such as whale watching, dolphin spotting, ocean rides, and scenic sunset tours. These boats must be able to handle the tough conditions of the open sea, particularly navigating the challenging coastal bar before reaching open water.

“We have a coastal bar to navigate before getting into the open sea, and it can be tough,” Anthony said. “That’s why we need engines that can withstand those conditions. Speed and torque are essential when crossing the bar to ensure the safety of the boat and everyone on board. Out of all the engines I’ve used, the Mercury’s—especially the V10—have been the best.”

With the busy summer season approaching, Port Jet Cruises is preparing for increased demand, running an average of four tours per day during the Christmas holidays. This requires engines that are not only powerful but also reliable and efficient under tough conditions.

“The SeaPro engines offer the perfect balance of economy and power,” Anthony explained. “With three V10 motors, we can carry 24 passengers, two crew members, and 1,000 liters of fuel, reaching the necessary speeds quickly. The low fuel consumption of just 77 liters per hour at cruising speed of 25 knots is a huge advantage for longer trips.”

Another notable feature is the smooth and quiet operation of the SeaPros, which is crucial when running multiple tours each day. “We operate in tough conditions, and the ocean can be hard on the engines,” Anthony said. “We need motors that can handle everything we throw at them while supporting our operations.”

The Ocean Rider Build: A Collaborative Effort

For the Ocean Rider’s construction, Anthony enlisted the expertise of Jason Carroll, founder of Grove Maine Fabrication and Primal Craft. Jason’s skills were key to building a larger boat that could accommodate more passengers while aligning with Anthony’s vision and operational needs.

“When Anthony told me he wanted the V10 SeaPros for the boat, I initially thought they might be underpowered, but they blew us away,” Jason said. “The boat, designed for 40 knots, exceeded expectations and reached 49 knots.”

Jason made several custom adjustments to ensure the boat was powerful, efficient, and agile. He and CNC Marine, who designed the boat, experimented with the hull’s pitch, raising it and stepping up the design to improve maneuverability. “It turns like a go-kart, not like a big vessel. Jason improved the design and stepped up the hull to enhance maneuverability. “It turns like a go-kart, not like a big vessel. It’s incredibly nimble for its size,” Jason said

The Ocean Rider, which weighs nine tonnes fully loaded, can turn 180 degrees at 35 knots. Can accelerate from zero to 49 knots in just 21 seconds. The hull design directs water away for better performance. From the front, ensuring a dry and comfortable ride for passengers.

The project was a true collaboration, with CNC Marine handling the boat design. Rogers Marine handling the electronics and engine rigging, and Macquarie Signs providing the boat wrap. Beaurtrex Seats supplied the seating, while Stern First Inflatables installed the wings on the rib. To protect the hull from saltwater damage and ease cleaning and servicing. Anthony also installed a boat lift from Aqua Lift Boats.
