1950 Robert Clark 61ft Ketch SOUTHWINDS – Exclusively for Sale with DBY Boat Sales

Southwinds is a magnificent 61ft sailing yacht constructed in 1950 and holds a significant role in English design pedigree as well as Australia’s yachting history.

Southwinds was designed by Robert Clark, the famous designer of Gypsy Moth IV, aboard which Sir Francis Chichester became the first man to complete a single handed circumnavigation of the globe. Her original plans date back to 1948 and include pencils of her keel profile and cabins, inks of her lines, half breadth and ketch. Sail plans still lie in London’s Greenwich Museum and her specifications are registered with Lloyds.

SOUTHWINDS is a truly exceptional example of classic yacht design and craftsmanship. Designed by renowned UK naval architect Robert Clark and launched in 1950 by the expert shipwrights at John Hayes & Sons in Sydney, this 61ft ketch has been meticulously restored and maintained by her fastidious owners to the highest standards.

Constructed from Huon Pine and Spotted Gum, with elegant Teak decks, SOUTHWINDS is as much a piece of maritime art as she is a capable bluewater cruiser. Her Yanmar 110hp diesel (2019) shows just 1, 400 hours and was last serviced in August 2024.

All sails—including main, mizzen, and genoa—are furling and operated from the oversized bronze deck winches within the security of the cockpit, making her easy to manage under sail.

Built for comfortable liveaboard cruising, she’s well-suited to both coastal exploration and extended ocean passages. A truly unique feature is her handcrafted wooden bath, a rare touch presumed to have been added to enhance comfort during family voyages.

Currently in full commercial survey, SOUTHWINDS is lightly operated as a charter yacht for corporate and high-end clients—primarily on Sydney Harbour, with advanced bookings in place. She’s also the preferred choice for fashion and film productions, offering a timeless and dramatic backdrop.  Full survey completed by AMSA in 2024.

Her exquisite restoration has earned her a nomination for the Global Classic Boats Award, affirming her status as a world-class example of classic yacht heritage.   Please see more on her instagram sight - Manlysailing.

If you’re a discerning buyer seeking a one-of-a-kind, fully operational classic sailing yacht with a storied past and an admired presence, SOUTHWINDS is your calling.
