EPIRBs (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons)
Yacht and Boat carry a variety of manual and automatic EPIRBs. If you are looking for a specific type of beacon please EMAIL US.
An EPIRB is a vital piece of safety equipment for boats.
The difference between an EPIRB and a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) is that an EPIRB has to provide the following features in order to comply with regulation.
1) Floats on it's own (inherently buoyant) UPRIGHT
2) Built in strobe light
3) Battery life of at least 40 hours
The AquaLink PLB is inherently buoyant but does not float upright. It does have a built in strobe but it's battery life is 35 hours.
The PLB search and location technology is the same as an EPIRB but the PLB does not qualify as an EPIRB. To comply with regulations the boat must have it's own EPIRB. However, individuals can also have their own PLB.
PLB's are also popular for kayakers, rockclimbers, skiers, hikers, bushwalkers and explorers heading to remote areas or caravaning or touring around Australia.
New 406MHz digital EPIRB beacons enable a much faster notification and rescue!
