PITTWATER, 18 AUGUST: A NSW Maritime Boating Officer is towing a 8-9m sloop out of Pittwater in a bid to lure a sick and distressed 3m calf Humpback whale out to sea.

The calf, believed to be about 1 month old, was noticed in Pittwater earlier today alone and attempting to cuddle up to the moored sloop. NSW Maritime has worked with DECC to lure the calf to sea by towing the yacht very slowly down Pittwater and round Barrenjoey Headland.

The BSO was at, 1340hrs, just east of Barrenjoey and intending to move south in a bid to return the calf to sea.

The BSO has liaised with the yacht's owner and has permission to conduct this assist.
