Conceived for lovers of long-distance cruising and extended voyages, the Long Range 23 is the first craft to obtain the RINA “Green Star Clean Energy and Clean Propulsion” certification
Mochi Craft chooses the 48th Salone Nautico Internazionale to present in world première the Long Range 23, the new three deck motor yacht through which Mochi Craft rewrites the history of the international nautical sector. Driven by the passion of Norberto Ferretti, and made possible by the years of research carried out by Ferretti’s AYT Advanced Yacht Technology - the Ferretti group design and research centre led by Andrea Frabetti - in collaboration with the Studio Zuccon International Project, the new 75 feet Long Range 23 embodies a real distillation of innovation and technology.
Conceived for lovers of long-distance cruising and extended voyages, the Long Range 23 is the first
craft to obtain the RINA “Green Star Clean Energy and Clean Propulsion” certification, the most
rigorous certification standard that can be applied to a pleasure craft.
After creating the Italian Lobster Boat Style with the Dolphin line launched in 2003, Mochi Craft now enters the “expedition boat” market – also called “long range” – with two new solutions that open up new horizons in the international nautical panorama: the “Zero Emission Mode” hybrid propulsion system and the new FER.WEY (Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht) trans-planing hull. The two technologies - the hybrid propulsion system and trans-planing hull – combine and reinforce each other in a craft that offers a revolutionary design concept and solutions.
The Long Range 23 is designed for spending long periods at sea in maximum comfort and total safety, backed by exceptional environmental awareness - the perfect mix of avant garde technology and Made in Italy design. As a result the Long Range 23 fits smoothly into the Mochi Craft fleet, fully reflecting the philosophy and style of the Forlì-based yard. As with its legendary lobster boats, the yard is rediscovering the past and offering a totally innovative, visionary reinterpretation of yachts with a timeless charm. The external lines are a synthesis of the Nordic “work boat” tradition and refined Made in Italy taste that Mochi Craft has skilfully expressed since 2003. In the interiors, the choice of prized materials, warm woods like teak and oak, natural fabrics and cutting edge design solutions redefine the concept of on board luxury and quality of life in the “expedition boat” market.
THE “ZEM” (ZERO EMISSION MODE) HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
An exclusive Ferretti patent, can operate in 5 different modes:
1) DIESEL PROPULSION AND ENERGY STORING: The diesel engines, as well as handling normal propulsion, operate the electric motors. In this way they work as generators, rapidly recharging the propulsion battery pack.
2) DIESEL-ELECTRIC: The electric motors, disengaged from the diesel, drive the propellers and are powered by the on board generators and the propulsion battery pack.
3) ZEM Propulsion: The propellers are powered by the electric motors, disengaged from the diesel and operated exclusively by the propulsion battery pack, providing totally silent, zero emission operations.
4) ZEM Function: All the on-board utilities are powered by the propulsion battery pack, including air conditioning, boiler and ARG, enabling totally silent, zero emission functioning of the boat.
Modes 3 and 4, for example, allow owners to enjoy the exclusive, unique experience of entering a bay, lying at anchor for several hours with full on-board functionality, then leaving, secure in the knowledge that the entire operation has been carried out in total silence and with zero emissions. In this way the yacht has no negative impact on the local environment.
During stays in port the propulsion battery pack is charged through a dedicated shore power connection.
All these modes are easily managed through a specially developed monitoring system. Touch screen selection of the various modes of propulsive energy transfer is immediate and intuitive.
This new technology, also made possible through significant international collaborations, marks a concrete step forward by the nautical industry towards greater respect for the environment, an objective that Ferretti is working towards through its constant commitment to research and development.
THE FER.WEY (FERRETTI WAVE EFFICIENT YACHT) HULL
The FER.WEY (Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht) hull, the result of years of research and development by AYT, is an innovative type of hull, described as ‘transplaning’, which enables owners to cruise with great comfort and efficiency in the intermediate speed range where both planing and displacement hulls generally behave in an abnormal way. At the same time the hull greatly reduces the rolling effect and guarantees low aft wave turbulence.
The FER.WEY transplaning hull allows this craft – tested by Ferretti in the Potsdam naval test tank after studies at the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) – to pass the 15 - 16 knot level gradually with a perfectly horizontal attitude, reaching 20 knots. A craft of this size would normally enter the planing hump at around 13 - 14 knots, already assuming a stern-down attitude at 12 knots. What’s more, in contrast to a classic displacement hull, where resistance rises dramatically with the longitudinal attitude when nearing critical speed, the FER.WEY hull’s resistance rises less drastically as speed increases. Another significant feature is that this hull doesn’t reach a definite ‘hump speed’, a performance need experienced by planing craft.
As a result, the FER.WEY hull offers owners:
• A stable longitudinal attitude, allowing owners to move around the craft in comfort, experiencing no marked change in attitude as speed varies.
• Maximum cruising efficiency up to 16 knots, a feature provided by the action of the prominent bow bulb, which cuts wave drag on the hull.
• Significant reduction in rolling.
Finally, the special shape of the FER.WEY hull allows the craft to rest on the sea bottom while protecting the propellers from impact damage, and allows owners to access areas that would be a risky proposition for other types of hull.
The extremely spacious cockpit – which gives access to the panoramic bridge – is furnished with two divans and a teak table for up to 8 guests. Access to the salon is through the side large glass doors, perfectly integrated into the windows running all the way around the main deck that flood the interiors with natural light and provide magnificent views of the sea from every direction. The fully retractable aft windows allow the salon and cockpit to combine into a single living area.
With the absence of partitions this 42 square metre sweep of open space, comprising the salon area and
raised dinette, combines comfort with lively sociability and warmth.
The living area is dominated by the presence of 3 large sofas, one with a peninsula, arranged in a C shape and flanked by two square, angular tables that create a relaxation area for up 11 people. The starboard side wall features a 32” built-in hideaway LCD TV. The lunch area, which provides access to the lower deck and helm station, is furnished with an extendable teak table for 8 and leather chairs.
Further forward is the roomy raised dinette with oak flooring, including a breakfast area with table and small sofa for 4, plus the spacious galley with peninsula and ample storage lockers, quartz/resin worktop and glass entresol separating the dinette from the cooking area. The dinette gives on to the forward lounge with small sofas, large sunloungers and two identical extendable tables – this area, the great design innovation introduced by the yard, distinguishes the Long Range 23 from other long ranges on the market, where it is always a technical space. The crew quarters are accessible from the cockpit and comprise one twin cabin and separate head with shower.
The full beam owner’s cabin lies in a privileged position amidships, ensuring maximum space and comfort. It has large open view windows on both sides, a desk with drawers and a leather sofa against the opposite wall. It also features a walk-in wardrobe and bathroom boasting a striped teak and maple floor in the most classic Mochi Craft style, with spacious separate shower and mosaic walls.
The lower deck offers three or four cabins, depending on the owner’s choice of layout. The standard layout with 3 cabins comprises a forward VIP cabin with spacious walk-in wardrobe and private bathroom with shower. Guest accommodation is provided by a twin cabin to starboard with L- shaped beds, also offering private bathroom with shower. The remaining space is dedicated to more functional, practical considerations, with a roomy storage/laundry area equipped with a washer/dryer, fridge and capacious pantry spaces that are especially appreciated during extended cruises. For owners seeking a greater number of berths, in the optional layout the storage area is replaced by a fourth cabin with one bed and private bathroom with shower. In this layout the VIP cabin is slightly modified – two facing cupboards replace the standard version’s walk-in wardrobe.
The upper deck helm station, accessed through the sliding glass side doors 4 metres above sea level, offers outstanding visibility and confirms the thoroughly seaworthy approach adopted for the design of this craft.
The onboard instrumentation embodies all Ferretti’s cutting edge technology, from the NAVIOP monitoring system with 15” touch screen display providing complete monitoring of the yacht’s functions to the ZF SmartCommand “EasiDock” and “AutoTroll” functions, ensuring excellent control of sailing and manoeuvres. Behind the skipper’s chair is a comfy L-shaped leather divan with extendable teak table, flanked by a writing desk. This space, with oak parquet floor, also features a day head. There is a large storage aft area, accessed by the exterior folding stairs. It’s also possible to choose an optional layout with a comfortable captain’s cabin and separate bathroom with shower. The external area to aft hosts the electro-hydraulic launch davit and garage for tender and jetski, available on request.
The stairway aft leads to the flybridge with a second helm station featuring electronically controlled dash, a large sunpad and two seats to aft.
STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE
The innovative FER.WEY hull, which already offers great stability, is complemented by the Mitsubishi ARG, Anti Rolling Gyro System – worldwide exclusive to Ferretti – which cuts roll caused by wave motion at anchor or under way by up to 50%, and stabilising fins, both mounted as standard.
The Long Range 23 is available with two latest-generation MAN Common Rail power options – a 500hp and an 800hp version. The 800hp engine provides a cruising speed of 13,5 knots and top speed of 16 knots (preliminary data).
