Getting a Boat Licence in SA

If you are operating a boat with a motor you must have a licence.  This is regardless of size of the boat or the engine, or whether the engine is being used at the time.

You must be 16 years old to apply for a boat licence. If you are aged between 12 and 16 you may be able to apply for a special permit to operate a recreational vessel. A practical test must be taken within six months of passing the written exam.

To get your South Australian Boat Licence:

A.  Review the South Australian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook

B.  The licence theory test will be based on information contained in the boating safety handbook.  There are 3 parts to the test which focus on navigation, boating rules and boating safety.  You can also study for your boat licence online

C.  Download the application form 

D. Go to a SA Transport Customer Service Centre 9-5 Monday to Friday.

E.  Pass the test (50 multiple choice questions) exam cost - $33.50 and lodge your application form to get your licence.  Licence cost $32.50

**Don’t forget to bring sufficient proof of identity ie. Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence or similar.**

If you hold an interstate licence you may operate a motor boat in SA for up to 90 days (from the date the boat was first operated in SA waters after which time you must apply for a South Australian Boat Operator's Licence.
